Eucalyptus Tree Care

eucalyptus leaves

Eucalyptus trees can make an attractive garden addition with their pleasant fragrance and stunning flowers, as well as captivating bark and foliage. The majority of these trees grow rapidly, capable of reaching heights of about 30 to 180 feet (9-55 m.). If you have a eucalyptus tree, it is advisable to have it professionally and regularly maintained, to keep it in a safe and healthy condition.

Common Eucalyptus Tree Problems

Eucalyptus trees can be easily uprooted by high winds, and their branches can snap off due to various factors, such as having a canker in the branch work. Another problem that commonly occurs includes yellowing leaves, a form of dieback. This can occur as a result of branches rubbing due to an overcrowded canopy that needs thinning so that air can get through.

On some occasions, these trees can have shallow roots that have not properly settled into the ground. The issue with this, of course, is that it can make the main trunk unstable, since the tree would not be properly anchored in place. If your tree is 30ft tall, then the root ball could be a potential problem to the buildings surrounding it. Other issues often identified include flaky bark and dying black ends, which could indicate a fault with the branch.

Eucalyptus Tree Maintenance

It is important that you arrange for your eucalyptus tree to be maintained every 3-5 years as a minimum. We would recommend that the higher canopy is cut back by 15-30% since this will allow it to regrow and get rid of dead branches. It is a good idea to pollard the tree and cut it right back since the branches will grow, as eucalyptus trees absorb water very quickly.
